To remove the chain from the camshaft, it is necessary to loosen the tension mechanism and subsequently remove it from the sprockets using the necessary tools. When performing work, the crankshaft must be locked against turning.

When the camshaft chain is worn out, it is adjusted, the capabilities of which are limited by the allowable wear indicators. In case of significant fatigue deformations, the chain must be replaced with a new one, for which its preliminary removal is performed. Removing the camshaft chain can be done by hand without the involvement of a car maintenance technician.

Camshaft chain removal tool

To remove the chain from the camshaft, the contractor must have the required set of tools, including a set of wrenches, a special key for removing the crankshaft pulley fixing nut, a blade for installation work, a hammer and a screwdriver. The composition of the wrench set is determined by the range of fasteners used to secure the chain drive of the camshaft for a particular engine.

Sequence of work

1. Remove the cover that covers the cylinder block and the upper part of the camshaft drive chain drive.

2. Using a special wrench, turn the engine crankshaft until the special marks on the sprocket and the bearing cap match.

3. Unlock the washer of the sprocket mounting bolt. To do this, bend a special tab on the washer.

4. Secure the engine crankshaft against turning and engage the handbrake.

5. Loosen the fastening bolt without unscrewing it all the way.

6. Remove the chain tensioner and unscrew the limit pin.

7. Unscrew the fastening bolt to the end and remove the sprocket from the shaft, keeping the chain from sagging. A sprocket can be used to remove the sprocket.

8. Lower the chain and remove it from the drive shaft sprocket.

9. Pull the chain out. A wire hook can be used to remove the chain.

After removal, it is necessary to replace the chain and put it on the sprockets in the reverse order. A new chain must be thoroughly treated with engine oil before installation. Then the chain must be put on the lower sprocket driven by the crankshaft. After that, the chain is attached to the sprocket of the driven units, which is fixed with a fastening bolt. Next, the chain is put on the camshaft sprocket, after which the tensioning mechanism is set to its operating position. After installation, the crankshaft is rotated to verify correct installation
