Safety on the road directly depends on the condition of the brake pads. The friction linings of the brake pads are only allowed to wear by 1 mm. With more severe wear, they must be changed. Let's consider how to carry out this operation on the rear pads of a Ford car.
Instructions
Step 1
Prepare a wrench for unscrewing the nuts on the wheels, screwdrivers and pliers. Then remove the key from the ignition and engage first gear. Place stops under the front wheels, which are suitable for ordinary wooden blocks.
Step 2
Raise the rear of the vehicle with a jack so that the wheel remains on the ground. Loosen the nuts slightly with a wheel wrench and raise the machine so that the wheel is suspended in the air. Finally unscrew the nuts and remove the rear wheel.
Step 3
Support the vehicle. Check the level of the brake fluid, which is located in the reservoir of the brake master cylinder. If there is too much liquid and it approaches the maximum mark, then carefully pump it out. Otherwise, you run the risk of splashing it when replacing the pads.
Step 4
Using a screwdriver, gently pry the retainer off the drum pins. Then pull it towards you and remove it. Take the pliers in your hands and turn them up the brake calipers. Then disconnect them by pulling them towards you. Remember that when replacing heavily worn pads, you must set the gap adjuster to its original position. To do this, use a screwdriver to squeeze the spring stop and, while holding it, turn the adjuster nut clockwise until it stops.
Step 5
Unhook the end of the upper spring from the rear shoe, and then finally remove it by disconnecting the other end from the front shoe. Remove the spacer bar together with the gap adjuster. After that, move the brake pads downward, trying to loosen the lower spring, which is carefully disconnected.
Step 6
Remove the cable end from the lever and pull out the rear brake shoe. Inspect all parts for wear and replace the pad. Install in reverse order. After the drum is in place, adjust the clearance by periodically pressing the brake pedal. In this case, characteristic clicks will be heard. The gap will be set when they stop. Screw on the wheel and check how it turns.
